Amalia Houri began her professional musical education in Kharkiv, Ukraine, at the Kharkiv Highest College of Arts, playing Ukrainian folk instrument Domra. Following the outbreak of war, she moved to the Netherlands, where she started her studies at ArtEZ Conservatory in Zwolle as a Classical Mandolinist. This recital marks not only the completion of her Bachelor’s degree, but also the culmination of years shaped by displacement, perseverance, and artistic growth. For much of her life, important decisions were determined by circumstance, uncertainty, and war. Through this performance, Amalia takes an important step toward reclaiming her own voice, not only as an artist, but also as a person choosing her own path with confidence and freedom.
‍
The first half of the programme features one of the most demanding and virtuosic works in the mandolin repertoire: Mandolin Concerto No. 2 by Raffaele Calace. Filled with intensity, brilliance, and emotional contrast, the concerto reflects themes of passion, uncertainty, and transformation that resonate strongly with Amalia’s own artistic journey. She is joined by a special string ensemble of musicians from ArtEZ Conservatory, Vuurvogel Sinfonietta, and Hanzeorkest under the baton of Alexej Pevzner.
‍
In the second half, the focus shifts from personal strength to the power of community. Audience will be introduced to the Mosaic Ensemble, a chamber group founded by Amalia Houri during her studies at ArtEZ Conservatory. Formed together with friends and like-minded musicians from different cultural backgrounds, the ensemble reflects the beauty of connection through music. Their programme of folk-inspired, Romantic, and contemporary chamber music celebrates diversity, artistry, and the unifying spirit of classical music.
‍
POWER is more than a recital: it is a story of reclaiming one’s voice. Through music, Amalia Houri transforms experiences of fear, doubt, displacement, and vulnerability into strength and artistic freedom. This evening invites the audience into a celebration of resilience, human connection, and the courage to keep creating despite uncertainty.
‍
Welcome to an evening about overcoming fear, beating the odds, and finding your community through art.
