The St. John Passion with Bach expert at the top Jos van Veldhoven.

Rarely was Bach so inspired as when composing the St. John Passion. He was 39 years old, in the prime of his life, and just one year a church musician in Leipzig. With this passion, he raised church music in the city to a new and unprecedented level. Not a contemplative theological reflection, but an emotional and sometimes harsh confrontation with the suffering and death of a truly good man. In the process, Bach pushes the musical boundaries of his time, with poignant melodies and wrenching harmonies, but also with hope and expectation in the heavenly final chorale. Music that touches you right in your soul.

Bach expert Jos van Veldhoven
This performance of the St. John Passion will be led by one of the Netherlands' best-known Bach experts, Jos van Veldhoven. For years he was musical director of the Nederlands Bachvereniging and as such was even honored with a decoration. He still performs countless concerts of the vocal music of Bach and contemporaries, often conducting pioneering research into unknown Baroque passion music. Consensus Vocalis, the most important professional vocal ensemble in the eastern Netherlands and Phion's permanent partner in countless concerts, has also more than earned its spurs with performances of Bach's passions. Together with six high-quality vocal soloists, this will be an unforgettable St. John Passion.
